Dive Site Review: Chrisola K (Giannis D Wreck)
Location: Abu Nuhas, Red Sea, Egypt
Dive Date: 30 of August 2024
Liveaboard: Bella 3, Bella Liveaboard
Having recently returned from an exhilarating overnight trip aboard the Bella 3, I am compelled to share my experience diving the Giannis D wreck. This dive site has earned its reputation as one of the Red Sea's most iconic wreck dives, and my experience certainly lived up to that expectation.
The Giannis D, a cargo ship that tragically sank in 1983 after striking a reef, now lies gracefully on its port side. The wreck is an impressive sight; split in two, it presents both a haunting and beautiful underwater landscape. The stern rests at about 20 meters, while the top of the mast rises to a mere 5 meters, making it accessible for safety stops and perfect for divers of various skill levels.
As we descended, the anticipation built. The visibility was excellent, allowing us to appreciate the scale of this massive wreck. The stern section is particularly photogenic, with the bridge and funnel resembling tiers of a wedding cake, a sight that left me in awe. Even divers without a camera should take a moment to absorb this visual feast.
Exploring the wreck was a highlight of the dive. We were able to penetrate the stern section, swimming through the bridge and even into the engine room and accommodation areas. However, I must emphasize the importance of caution when navigating the interior; the angle of the wreck can indeed be disorienting, and I recommend keeping a good buddy system in place to ensure a safe experience.
The marine life surrounding the wreck added to the experience. Schools of fish darted in and out of the wreckage, and we even spotted a few larger species patrolling the area. The juxtaposition of the wreck and the thriving marine ecosystem made for a captivating dive.
Overall, diving the Giannis D was an unforgettable experience that I would highly recommend to any diver visiting the Red Sea. The combination of historical intrigue, stunning underwater visuals, and vibrant marine life creates a perfect dive site that deserves a spot on every diver's bucket list. Thank you to the Bella Liveaboard team for facilitating such an incredible adventure. I can't wait to dive here again!... Show More
