Ras Um Sid

Diving at the Ras Umm Sid dive site in Sharm El Sheikh was nothing short of spectacular! With its rich biodiversity and stunning underwater topography, it’s a true paradise for divers of all levels.

The dive begins at a vertical wall that descends from the surface to about 18 meters, forming a plateau that extends roughly 50 meters towards the drop-off. This unique structure creates a variety of environments to explore. As we descended, we were immediately greeted by the sight of schools of Barracudas—an exhilarating experience that set the tone for the dive.

The plateau itself is a playground of marine life. Scorpion Fish were cleverly camouflaged within the coral, making for an exciting treasure hunt as we searched for these beautifully designed creatures. I was also delighted to see Bat Fish gracefully hovering around, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. The sandy areas provided a perfect resting spot for Blue Spotted Sting Rays, which were a joy to observe as they lay in their serene surroundings.

One of the most breathtaking highlights of this dive was the stunning column of Gorgonian Fans that stretches from 14 to 28 meters. The sheer size and beauty of these fans were awe-inspiring, providing a stunning backdrop for underwater photography. At the far corner of the dive site, where the currents converge, we were fortunate to encounter schools of Snappers, Barracudas, and large Napoleons—an exhilarating sight that left us all in awe.

On the other side of the dive site lies one of the most remarkable coral gardens in Sharm El Sheikh. This area is filled with small pinnacle formations adorned with soft corals, creating a mesmerizing underwater landscape. Here, we encountered a variety of small, fascinating creatures, including Nudibranchs and Devil Scorpion Fish, each adding to the rich tapestry of marine life.

The dive was well organized, and our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out various species and ensuring everyone felt safe and comfortable in the water. The visibility was excellent, allowing us to fully appreciate the vibrant colors and intricate details of the coral and marine life.

Overall, Ras Umm Sid is a must-visit dive site for anyone diving in Sharm El Sheikh. Its abundant marine life, stunning coral formations, and the thrill of encountering larger species make it a truly memorable experience. Ras Um Sid, my favorite dive site, is a true gem located at the North Point of Sharm El Sheikh Harbor. This captivating coral shelf begins right at the shore, offering divers a convenient and picturesque entry point. As you descend into the depths, you'll be greeted by a sloping reef that extends down to a maximum depth of 80 feet, where a sandy bottom awaits.

The steep sloping wall of this reef is a sight to behold, stretching from the point at Ras Umm Sid inward toward the bay to the west. Along this magnificent wall, you'll encounter intermittent patches of sand, coral heads, and remarkable pinnacles, each adding to the enchanting underwater landscape.

Coral enthusiasts will be delighted by the diverse attractions that Ras Um Sid has to offer. Gorgonians, acropora, fire corals, and dense patches of soft coral create a vibrant and visually stunning environment. The substantial coral formations found here are a testament to the thriving marine ecosystem.

The coral heads that populate this area serve as home to a multitude of reef fish, providing an incredible opportunity to witness their intricate behaviors. Among the many residents, the majestic lionfish stands out as a fascinating creature to observe. As you explore the blue waters off the reef, you may also encounter a variety of open ocean fish, including rays, barracudas, and even sharks. The sandy bottom is home to the elusive crocodilefish, adding an element of excitement to the dive.

Ras Um Sid offers a delightful depth range of 20 to 80 feet, making it accessible to divers of various skill levels. Whether you choose to embark on a shore dive or join a dive boat with the guidance of a local expert, this site promises an unforgettable underwater adventure. From snorkelers and novices to advanced divers, dive masters, and instructors, Ras Um Sid accommodates all levels of expertise.

Prepare to be awe-struck by the abundance of marine life, including big and small jacks/trevally, emperor and regal angelfish, an array of parrotfish, triggerfish with their distinctive patterns, yellowspine and ringtail surgeons, the majestic Napoleon wrasse, and the graceful movement of moray eels.
