"An Adventurous Dive at Sha’ab Mahmud: A Hidden Gem"
Sha’ab Mahmud, with its long, half-outcropping coral reef running from northwest to southeast, offers divers an impressive and intriguing dive experience. This reef separates a vast sandy lagoon from the open sea and is punctuated by two channels known as Small Crack and Big Crack. Small Crack, also known as Fossma Saghir, is the southern channel and provides a thrilling dive opportunity with its unique characteristics.
Diving through Small Crack is best done when the tide is ebbing, as the current runs south towards the lagoon. This allows divers to drift back to their boat, which is moored inside the lagoon. It is important to check the direction of the current before diving, as strong northward currents can make diving dangerous, especially without a zodiac. With proper planning and conditions, diving through Small Crack is an incredible experience.
As you descend along the outer reef wall, which drops to a depth of 18-22 meters, you will be greeted by a vibrant underwater landscape. Gorgonians, Alcyonarians, and large table corals adorn the reef, creating a stunning backdrop for your dive. Keep an eye out for turtles, Leopard sharks (Stegostoma fasciatum), and Whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), as they often frequent this area. During the summer months, schools of barracuda and jackfish can be seen, adding to the excitement of the dive. Near the mouth of the channel, a school of breams (genus Acanthopagrus) can be spotted, creating a mesmerizing sight.
Inside the northern channel, you will find an abundance of fire corals (Millepora dichotoma), a characteristic feature of areas with strong currents. The diverse underwater environment at Sha’ab Mahmud provides a rich habitat for various forms of marine life, making every dive a unique and unforgettable experience.
One of the appealing aspects of diving at Sha’ab Mahmud is the tranquility of the site, with few divers compared to other popular dive spots. This allows for a more relaxed and immersive exploration of the underwater world. Another highlight of this dive site is the opportunity to spot Leopard sharks (Stegostoma fasciatum), adding an extra element of excitement to your underwater adventure.
Before embarking on your dive at Sha’ab Mahmud, make sure to carefully plan and assess the current conditions. Take the necessary precautions, and if the current is strong and running northwards, it's best to hold off on the dive, especially without a zodiac.
Discover the hidden gem of Sha’ab Mahmud and immerse yourself in its captivating underwater world. With its diverse marine life, beautiful corals, and unique dive conditions, this site offers an adventure that will leave you in awe of the wonders that lie beneath the surface.
