"A Drifting Adventure at Woodhouse Reef: A Dive Worth Chasing"
Woodhouse Reef, although narrow and long, presents a thrilling diving experience without any shelter for boats or fixed moorings. As a result, divers exploring this spot must embark on a drift dive, but only in favorable weather conditions. Mornings are often preferred, basking in the warm glow of direct sunlight.
The northern half of the eastern side of Woodhouse Reef, measuring around 0.8 miles, houses the most captivating section. Here, a canyon greets divers with its awe-inspiring presence, revealing intriguing secrets as it opens up. Dive to a depth of about 22-26 meters and behold the mesmerizing Antipathes sp., a deep-sea black coral. Exercise caution and conclude your dive before reaching the saddle, especially during turbulent seas, as it can create a powerful eddy known as 'the washing machine' by local divers, only crossable under ideal weather conditions.
As you descend to approximately 30 meters, the canyon runs parallel to the reef's main axis, leading you to a sandy ledge. The exit of the canyon on the right side surprises divers with a vibrant red anemone. Following the sandy ledge northwards, it widens, offering a depth of 14 meters and eventually leading to the saddle connecting Woodhouse and Jackson reefs. Throughout this enchanting route, the water's clarity is remarkable, granting clear sightings of jackfish, sea turtles, sharks, and an abundance of both hard and soft corals. Keep a lookout for intriguing colonies of black coral.
