🐢 The Galapagos Islands are world-renowned for scuba diving and are often referred to as a ‘bucket list’ destination for divers. Chances to encounter unique marine life and explore one of the world’s most pristine underwater echo systems make the Galapagos a sought-after destination. The group of islands are located in the Pacific Ocean about 600 miles (965 km) off the coast of Ecuador and are known for their rich biodiversity both above and below the water. 🦈 The dive sites are teeming with a variety of marine life including large schools of fish, rays, sea lions, marine iguanas, multiple species of sharks, and unique marine species found only in the Galapagos. ⚠ It is important to note that the Galapagos Islands can have challenging divining conditions. Divers should expect cold water temperatures and the possibility of strong currents at many dive sites. It is recommended that divers have the appropriate certification and experience level to get the most out of diving in this region. 📍 Galapagos Islands Dive Sites |

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit foundation that was founded in 2013 by Dutch inventor Boyan Slat. Their goal is to have removed 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040 and put themselves out of business once the oceans are clean. The non-profit has developed several innovative systems to remove garbage from oceans and rivers. One of their inventions called System 03, is about 2.5 kilometers (1.4 miles) in length and can clean an area of ocean equivalent to a football field every five seconds. May 29th 2024 was their 100th plastic extraction from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. They live streamed the extract on X and YouTube. Check out the video here. |

Spiny lobsters helping save Florida’s reefs |
Florida’s Reefs need a hero and it might just be a spiny lobster. After reaching record high ocean temperatures in 2023, many of the Florida Keys coral reefs are in poor condition. A three-year study by scientists from the Florida fish and wildlife conservation commission (FWC) found that the lobsters may be a helper in the fight to save coral reefs. The lobsters’ urine scares off predatory worms and snails who eat the delicate recovering corals. Fun fact: lobsters tend to urinate frequently as it’s part of how they communicate with each other. Predatory creatures can smell the odor and will avoid it. The FWC is considering options to use the spiny lobsters along side other coral restoration activities to help protect and rejuvenate Florida’s reefs. Read More |
