Vanguard is a pilot habitat designed to house a crew of three for short-term missions focused on training and testing. The results were staggering, surpassing every previous year since the challenge began in 2016. Lionfish, first reported in the Caribbean in the mid-1980s, have caused severe ecological damage due to their rapid reproduction and lack of natural predators. Their appetite for small fish disrupts delicate marine ecosystems, threatening key species that are essential for maintaining healthy coral reefs. By removing thousands of these venomous predators, participants in the 2024 Lionfish Challenge played a crucial role in reducing their harmful impact and protecting Florida's reefs.
