2024 Olympic Tower's Impact on Tahiti’s Reefs

Now that the 2024 Olympics have concluded, Tahiti is left with the $5 million aluminum judges' tower built for the surfing competition.

From the outset, the tower's construction sparked controversy and raised ecological concerns among environmental groups and locals. The introduction of manmade structures into the ocean poses several risks to the ecosystem. Activities like drilling and pile driving can damage corals and the reef's structural integrity, while construction-related disturbances may stir up sediment, potentially smothering and suffocating marine life.

Researchers plan to monitor the reef over time to assess its health following the tower's installation.

Sea Lions with High-Res Cameras

Marine biologists are mapping Australia's seafloor by attaching cameras to the backs of sea lions. Due to the high cost and challenges of deep-sea technology, only a small portion of the global seabed has been mapped to date.

Allowing the sea lions to swim freely enables exploration of previously uncharted areas. In addition to mapping the seabed, the cameras and sensors provide valuable insights into the sea lions' habitat and behavior.

So far, nearly 90 hours of footage covering more than 500 km (310 miles) has been recorded, helping to map 5,000 sq km (1,930 sq miles) of habitat

Check out a video of the sea lions zooming through the water here.

Wakatobi Dive Resort leads the way with protecting corals

The Wakatobi Dive Resort, located in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, is known for their commitment to marine conservation and being one of the world’s most proactive eco-tourism resorts. They have now brought on an in-house marine biologist to take their coral reef protection to the next level.

A new initiative called The Reef Health Assessment program was launched earlier this year to monitor the health of coral reefs within the resort’s private marine persevere. The program is using cutting edge monitoring techniques to further coral reef conservation efforts and better measure the benefits of Wakatobi’s conservation model to the overall reef’s health.
