News | 130+ Historic Shipwrecks Mapped Beneath
Gibraltar | | Using high-resolution seabed
mapping and historical records, researchers identified more than 130 previously undocumented shipwrecks
beneath the waters around Gibraltar, the narrow strait between southern Spain and North Africa.
Dating from the 17th century
through World War II, the wrecks offer a remarkable glimpse into centuries of maritime history. Many remain
protected archaeological sites, reminding us that countless stories still lie hidden beneath the

scientists, freedivers, and local communities are finding innovative ways to restore damaged coral reefs.
