Using AI to monitor coral reefs

Researches from the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Mānoa have developed a new tool with the purpose of identifying and measuring reef halos.

A reef halo is a phenomenon that occurs around healthy reefs. A perimeter of bare sand seems to form around the corals and may be an important indicator of the health and vitality of coral reefs.

The newly developed tool uses artificial intelligence (AI) which greatly speeds up the way researches can identify and measure the reef halos from space.

3rd century BC shipwreck found by accident

A training exercise between Croatian and Italian naval mine clearance-divers has resulted in the discovery of one of the earliest preserved shipwrecks.

Discovered off the waters of Šćedra Island archipelago, the shipwreck is well preserved and contained a cargo of ancient amphorae dating back to the 3rd century BC.
